Barbaro is beginning the second phase of his remarkable recovery from a shattered right hind leg he suffered in the Preakness.

On Tuesday, Barbaro had his cast replaced by Dr. Dean Richardson. “His leg looks excellent,” Richardson said. “The incision has healed well and judging by the radiographs, the graft is opacifying [taking]. Callus is forming nicely, and all of the implants [plate and screws] look unchanged.” The cast was removed under general anesthesia, and Barbaro had a very smooth pool recovery.
