A high school basketball game has gone viral and it wasn’t for what was happening on the court, but for the incredibly awkward exchange between the announcers.

During a broadcast of a Minnesota high school basketball game on Nov. 30, play-by-play announcer Lee Bernick mentioned the tragic passing of his 12-year-old dog, Lucy, who he said was run over by a car in his driveway.

But just as Bernick was detailing his pet’s cause of death, an exciting play unfolded on the court that ended with a highlight-reel dunk. To which George Nusbaum, who was also on the call, decided to draw a parallel between the two topics of conversation and blurted out, “Like that? Did she get run over like that?”

Nusbaum later provided a more emotional response, saying, “And yes, our hearts and minds are with your sweet Lucy, in dog heaven.”

The viral clip doesn’t show the entire exchange, which provides a little more context. The topic of death was initially brought up because the announcers were discussing the recent loss of one player’s mother. This gave Bernick an opportunity to mourn a loss of his own, which is how Lucy first came into the conversation.

At first, it’s unclear that Lucy is a pet because of the cut-off video. But Bernick’s son later clarified on Twitter that his dad was, in fact, talking about their dog.
