If Patrick McEnroe ever hoped to recruit Pete Sampras to play for the Davis Cup again, forget it.
It’s unlikely that Sampras will compete for the Cup again after McEnroe’s pointed criticism on Sampras before the Open began.
Pointing to the fact Sampras has gone 17 straight events without a title, Little Mac said there were holes in Sampras’ game now, particularly his backhand. McEnroe added Sampras has lost his past grit and players no longer feared him.
When asked to respond to those rips yesterday, Sampras, who has all but boycotted the Davis Cup anyhow, quipped: “Is that the Davis Cup captain? Fat chance I’m playing now.”
