CHSAA CHAMPIONSHIP: Moore Cath. 1 – St. Francis 0

Nick Doscher will land a date with Jessica Simpson today and hit the lottery tomorrow. That has to happen. Anything else just wouldn’t make sense. That’s how hot he is right now.

It certainly fits the week’s sequence. Tuesday, the Royals drafted Doscher in the eighth round of baseball’s amateur draft. Yesterday, he led Moore Catholic to the CHSAA championship.

In the fifth inning, Doscher roped a solo home run that crashed into the left-field foul pole for the only run of the game as Moore defeated St. Francis Prep 1-0 in the CHSAA championship game at KeySpan Park in Coney Island.

But that’s not all. Doscher, who started the game at catcher, also was the winning pitcher in relief. Before the third inning, Moore starter Gerard Tingos bent over in pain after his second warm-up pitch. After his third, Tingos called Doscher to the mound and Tingos’ day was done with a strained rib.

Doscher didn’t allow a hit and struck out seven in the game’s remaining five innings. He is the team’s closer, accustomed to pitching one inning, two max.

“My dad [Moore coach, also named Nick Sr.] went out there and asked me, ‘Do you think you can go five,’ ” Doscher said. “I told him, ‘Give me the ball.’ I knew I could go five. I’d do anything for this team.”

Doscher’s dad, who said he doesn’t know if he’ll come back to coach Moore next year now that his son will graduate, had mixed emotions.

“It’s been tough the whole year, because every game I coached him this season was one less game I was gonna get to coach him,” he said. “I’ve been coaching him since he was 6 years old, ya know. It was hard seeing everything happening to him the last two innings. My father instincts were a lot more than my coaching instincts right there.”

Gregory Fleck, pitched a brilliant game for the Terriers. He gave up six hits and four walks and struck out six in a complete-game effort. The lone mistake was Doscher’s solo shot.

The CHSAA playoffs are played under a double-elimination format. No. 2 seed Moore, which had previously beat No. 1 Xaverian, No. 3 Stepinac and No. 7 Iona Prep, could have lost yesterday and still win the championship.

Doscher . said he will most likely sign with the Royals and forego college. “It’s a dream come true,” he said. “Senior year was great, what better way to end it than this.”
