DUDDY HEADS ‘IRISH’ CARD
Jim Borzell compares John Duddy’s prospering career to being in the eye of a hurricane.
“Everything is circling around you and you just try to stay balanced,” said Borzell, a matchmaker and adviser to Duddy, the unbeaten Manhattan-based Irish middleweight who fittingly will headline a card dubbed Irish Express next Thursday at the Theatre at the Garden.
Duddy (15-0 with 13 KOs) takes on Shelby Pudwill (21-2-1, 9 KOs) for the vacant WBC Continental Americas middleweight title. Fighters with Irish roots dominate the majority of the card, including Duddy’s stablemate James Moore (3-0, 2 KOs), Boston heavyweight James Clancy (5-0, 1 KO) and female fighter Maureen Shea (4-0, 3 KOs).
Manhattan’s Peter “Kid Chocolate” Quillin (2-0, 2 KOs) is also on the card. In the co-feature, Irish middleweight champ Matthew Macklin (16-1, 12 KOs) defends his title against Chris Troupe (10-4, 5 KOs).
Only 100 tickets remain for the 5,000-seat venue as of yesterday. It’s a sign of Duddy’s growing popularity since moving to the U.S. in 2003.
“When I first came out there were about 150-200 people at my first fight,” Duddy said. “Now the Irish community likes to come out and support their own. Hopefully, I’ll do them proud.”
