MET NOTES

MIAMI – Scott Erickson appears to be rounding into form.

Erickson delivered his third straight solid start last night for Norfolk, firing 8 innings of one-run ball. He allowed seven hits, walking two and striking out two.

With the All-Star break, the Mets don’t need their fifth starter again until July 19. Right now, Erickson may be a more intriguing option for that start than Matt Ginter, who’s struggled lately.

Incidentally, Norfolk’s best pitcher lately has been Randy Keisler, who’s posted a 1.20 ERA in his last five starts. In his most recent outing on Friday, Keisler went seven innings, allowing one run while striking out seven and walking none.

In his first start for Double-A Binghamton, top prospect Scott Kazmir surrendered two runs in six innings. Kazmir gave up five hits and five walks, striking out five.

Scott Strickland (recovering from Tommy John surgery) felt some tenderness and will now throw two side sessions before he pitches again next week.

Tom Glavine on a report that he and Mike Piazza are planning to recruit Randy Johnson at this week’s All-Star game:

“Nobody’s asked me to do anything, but I certainly will mention the other side of town when I see him.”

With a Met scout watching last night, Boston’s Derek Lowe threw seven innings, allowing six runs but none earned.

Kaz Matsui has only two errors in his last 17 games and has looked better with his throws. Said infield coach Matt Galante: “I think we’re starting to see more consistency.”
