Jimmy, Jimmy and… Stephen A.?

Stephen A. Smith might be looking to add another job to his resume.

“My aspiration is to ultimately do late-night one day,” Smith told USA TODAY Sports

The ESPN star is thinking about broadening his horizons and noted the lack of diversity among the current crop of late night hosts.

“I think there’s a hole in late-night that I could help fill,” Smith said. “So when I think about Jimmy Kimmel, and Stephen Colbert and Jimmy Fallon and those guys – I can’t forget Trevor Noah, who I think does a phenomenal job on Comedy Central – it’s something that I aspire to do as well.”

He’ll get a chance with “Stephen A’s World” on ESPN+, which he says will allow him to get his “feet wet in that realm.”

Smith still intends to include sports talk, but he intends to add celebrities from other parts of the entertainment world to the mix. And he added he’s been molded by icons like Johnny Carson, Jay Leno, David Letterman and Arsenio Hall.

The biggest challenge in making sure he’s successful in that world, according to Smith, is being funny.

“When I think about late-night, for example, the only thing I concern myself with is the opening monologue,’’ Smith said. “There’s nothing else in the show I don’t believe I can’t do. It’s just the opening monologue that I’ve always professed would be a challenge for me, because I don’t know if I would be funny intentionally. But nevertheless, it’s a challenge I’m ultimately willing to partake.”

It’s a long way from where Smith found himself just over a decade ago, after his first stint with ESPN ended.

“I was unemployed the first year,’’ Smith said. “Nobody would hire me, from 2009 and 2010, nobody would hire me for television, nobody would hire me for radio. I couldn’t get a job.”
