Everton rained on Liverpool’s parade today as it defeated the Reds in front of their new U.S. owner John W. Henry.

The Blues won 2-0 in the hotly-contested match between the crosstown rivals at Everton’s Goodison Park following some sloppy defense from Liverpool.

Henry’s company New England Sports Ventures (NESV) — which also owns the Boston Red Sox — bought the historic northern England club Friday after a drawn-out legal battle. The club is now effectively debt-free after NESV agreed to repay a $370 million (£230 million) loan from the Royal Bank of Scotland as part of the deal.

Liverpool’s much-maligned former American owners Tom Hicks and George Gillett made a failed bid to block the sale of the English Premier League club in court last week.
