Most of the Red Sox questioned yesterday didn’t watch Pedro Martinez’s Mets debut Monday, but word gets around fast.
Curt Schilling, Manny Ramirez and Jason Varitek were among Martinez’s former Boston teammates who said they missed his Opening Day start, but others heard about Martinez’s 12 strikeouts over six innings.
“He pitched pretty good,” Boston pitching coach Dave Wallace deadpanned.
“He looked awesome,” Kevin Millar said.
After allowing a three-run, tape-measure homer to Cincy’s Adam Dunn in the first, Martinez whiffed 12 of 14 hitters. Martinez did not get a decision in the Mets’ 7-6 loss.
“It doesn’t faze him,” former teammate Kevin Youkilis said of the homer. “It just fuels the fire.
“He’s got that mentality. He might give up one home run and he can be lights on. And then it’s lights out.”
Johnny Damon said, “We are definitely going to miss him. He’s such a talent. He knows how to get it done.”
