The fiancée of late ESPN reporter Edward Aschoff, who died on Christmas Eve, said on Twitter Thursday that the “outpouring of love” since his death has helped her cope.

“The outpouring of love, admiration, and gratitude for his life have been so incredible, and have helped me through these last few days,” Katy Berteau wrote in one of 12 tweets sent from Aschoff’s official Twitter account.

“It has brought me brief moments of joy in this darkness to see all the pictures, videos, and memories of all the lives he touched,” she said.

Berteau, in her posts, also clarified the health complications experienced by Aschoff before his death on his 34th birthday.

It has been widely reported that Aschoff was diagnosed with multifocal pneumonia, but Berteau revealed the college football reporter was also receiving treatment for another condition in the days leading up to Christmas Eve.

“After many tests – bone marrow and lung biopsies – treatment was started for a presumed diagnosis of HLH, an unregulated, over-activation of the immune system that causes it to attack itself and other healthy tissues,” Berteau wrote.

“Within 3 days of being moved into the ICU, he passed.”

Berteau confirmed that before HLH treatment, Aschoff was diagnosed and treated for multifocal pneumonia, but his symptoms worsened, despite taking antibiotics.

After that development, “We took him back to the ER and he was immediately admitted,” wrote Berteau.

Along with every tweet, Berteau shared a photo containing Aschoff — including four pictures of the two of them.

“I want to share the brightness that he showed, even up until the last day he was awake,” she wrote.

“He kept the doctors and nurses constantly laughing, and always made a point to thank them and tell them what a great job they were doing.”
