NOT long after he retired from the NFL, Stephen Boyd would get calls from other former pros and the conversation would inevitably lead to their post-football careers.

“Most of the guys would just wake up in the morning, hang out and play golf every day,” said Boyd, who played seven years for the Lions. “When I told them I was going into coaching, none of them could believe it. They all just wanted to get away from the game.”

That’s not the case anymore.

“Now I get calls about other guys doing the same thing I am,” Boyd said. “It’s tough to get football out of your system.”

The former Pro Bowl linebacker is in his third year at Chaminade on Long Island, where he doubles as the school’s strength-and-conditioning director and the team’s linebackers coach.

Third-seeded Chaminade faces No. 6 St. Joseph by the Sea in the first round of the CHSFL AAA playoffs Sunday at 1 p.m. at Chaminade.

The CHSFL playoffs start tomorrow, when No. 8 Farrell visits No. 1 St. Anthony’s at 7 p.m. Fifth-seeded Iona Prep visits No. 4 Holy Trinity and No. 2 Mt. St. Michael hosts No. 7 Holy Cross, both Sunday at 1 p.m.

In the CHSFL AA, Fordham Prep hosts Christ the King at Coffey Field, Kellenberg visits St. Peter’s and St. Francis Prep hosts Hayes at St. John’s University, all on Sunday at 1 p.m. Stepinac heads to Kings Bay to play Xaverian Sunday at 4.

The PSAL finishes its regular season with Lehman visiting Clinton today at 2 and JFK hosting Columbus at 2:30. Sunday at noon, South Shore visits Canarsie, Sheepshead Bay heads to Ft. Hamilton, and surprising teams Grady and Madison meet at noon at Madison.
