Ex-Red Bull academy prospect Matt Kassel has signed a contract with the rival Philadelphia Union Tuesday. The 23-year-old midfielder is a Bridgewater (NJ) native.
Kassel, whose father had been a high-ranked MetroStars executive, had signed with the Red Bulls in 2011 as the club’s third-ever Home Grown player to join the senior roster. He spent last year with the USL side Pittsburgh Riverhounds, scoring six goals in 18 games.
After spending this preseason with the Union as a trialist, he earned a contract.
