FOUR FATHER
Colorful CBS College Sports Network analyst Pete Gillen, who coached Xavier to a Sweet Sixteen in 1990 and Providence to an Elite Eight in 1997, breaks down the Final Four exclusively for The Post today. As told to Steve Serby.
THIS could be one of the best Final Fours ever – four titans. Give the committee credit; they picked the right teams. I’m batting .500 – two out of four (North Carolina, Memphis) still standing. If my teams shot like that I’d still be coaching. But they didn’t and I’m not. That’s life.
SATURDAY NIGHT
KANSAS-NORTH CAROLINA: Tyler Hansbrough is just so intense, so aggressive. Dave Cowens was like that. Kansas will have to slow down Hansbrough with double teams and get back in transition because Ty Lawson is like a comet. On offense, Kansas – especially Darrell Arthur – should take the ball right at Hansbrough and try to get him in some foul trouble, and run Lawson off some screens, bang him around a little bit so he’s not thinking offense. Dribble penetration can hurt North Carolina.
Kansas was a little tight against Davidson; it’ll help them that the Elite Eight monkey is off their back. Kansas is at its best in an up-tempo game. I think this one will be in the 80s. Carolina wins it by eight or 10 points in a real shootout.
UCLA-MEMPHIS: UCLA plays unbelievable defense, and so does Memphis. When I coached, my guys thought defense was a town in Siberia. Memphis has the frontline to give Kevin Love some trouble. He’ll get his 18 or 20, but they’ll make him work. I thought coming into the weekend (Texas’) D.J. Augustin was the best point guard in the country. I was wrong. It’s (Memphis’) Derrick Rose. (UCLA point guard) Darren Collison is terrific, but Rose is another level. All year he’s deferred to Chris Douglas-Roberts and the other guys, but now he has said: “This is winning time. I love my teammates, but I love winning more.”UCLA’s gotta pack in their defense – don’t let Memphis in the lane at all. Make Memphis beat them with the perimeter jumpshot. Get back on D, sag, give ’em one shot and push it back at Memphis. You can get some transition baskets against Memphis. If not, have Love set some high screens – then you can get some driving lanes in there. Love can hurt Joey Dorsey and the Memphis big guys on the perimeter either with a jump shot or by making a fake and driving by them.
Memphis is playing with a chip on their shoulder. I think it’ll be a real nailbiter. Memphis by five or six.
MONDAY NIGHT
CAROLINA-MEMPHIS: Here’s one way Carolina can win the national championship: Play the Harry zone – put their hands up and yell “HARRY” every time they shoot the ball. If that doesn’t work, yell “BARRY.” If that doesn’t work, yell “LARRY.” If that doesn’t work, you go get a beer. North Carolina’s weakness is they cannot guard dribble penetration. What does Memphis do best? Dribble penetration. They better get Harry, Barry, and Larry ready and pack in the zone.
Memphis has three big athletic guys inside, and their bench is a little better than Carolina’s bench. Tiger, tiger, burning bright, in the forests of the night, what immortal hand or eye . . . that’s all I remember. After the first two sentences I was out. It’ll be a real battle. John Calipari cuts down the nets.
