ROME — Italian soccer star Francesco Totti was under investigation by the country’s Inland Revenue for an eight-years-old tax claim worth $543,240 (€400,000), Italian newspaper Corriere Della Sera reported Saturday.
The Roma captain, voted five times as Italy’s player of the year, stood accused of
irregularities in two assessments relating to benefits claimed in the 2002/2003 season.
The 34-year-old, currently sidelined with flu that rules him out of Roma’s visit to reigning champion Inter, denies any wrongdoing.
Totti has endured a difficult season for the Giallorossi on the pitch as his influence in the Italian capital wanes in the twilight of his career, scoring only three goals in 18 Serie A appearances.
