RIZE, Turkey — Onetime U.S. soccer phenom Freddy Adu fell further into the sport’s abyss today after agreeing a loan move to the Turkish second division.
Adu, at one time a huge youth prospect, was set to join the relatively-unknown Rizespor until the end of the season after struggling to find regular playing time across Europe, The Washington Post reported yesterday.
The former D.C. United and Real Salt Lake player will still remain under contract with Portuguese giant Benfica. He trained with clubs in Denmark and Germany before sealing the move to Turkey.
The 21-year-old has made 15 appearances for the U.S. national team, scoring twice.
