There is no live racing at Aqueduct today because of the bitter arctic cold wave, although the track will be open for simulcasting. The National Weather Service forecast calls for a high of 19 degrees by 3 p.m. with the wind chill between 6 degrees above zero to 7 degrees below.

NYRA spokesman John Lee explained why racing was cancelled today but not yesterday, when it snowed: “It is expected to be much colder, especially earlier in the day, and the wind will also be more severe.”

Only 1,180 showed up yesterday at the Big A.

“It was pretty cold but manageable,” jockey Maylan Studart said. “There have been worse days. The wind was low, so that was helpful.”

Racing at Turfway Park in Kentucky was cancelled yesterday and today because of the freezing weather.
