The Giants added to their depth at their receiving corps yesterday, signing Fred Brock, who was with the Cardinals in 1996 when Jim Fassel was offensive coordinator in Arizona.

Brock is a small (5-11, 181-pound) receiver who has a total of only three career catches, but he is familiar with Fassel’s offensive system. He was selected by the Browns in the expansion draft, but his contract was terminated by Cleveland on May 4. Brock, 24, will provide insurance in case of injuries at receiver, as there does not appear to be any spots open with Ike Hilliard, Amani Toomer, Joe Jurevicius, Brian Alford and David Patten all returning.

The Giants also named Avis Roper assistant director of communications, replacing Aaron Salkin, who is now the public-relations director for the Falcons.
