The Gold Cup groups and pairings were announced today, with the U.S. _ fresh off a 3-0 World Cup qualifying rout of Trinidad & Tobago _ set to play Grenada, Honduras and Haiti.
The brackets appear tailor-made to set up a clash with archrival Mexico in the Gold Cup final, to be held at Giants Stadium on July 26. Of course, the way El Tri is playing, one never knows, do one?
After opening up in Seattle against Grenada, local fans could get plenty of chances to see the U.S. They play Honduras on July 9 at RFK _ oh boy, remember the Honduran fans taking over the place in that classic World Cup qualifying upset? _ and Haiti up at Gillette Stadium July 11.
Then regardless if they finish first or second in Group B, they play a July 18 quarterfinal at Philadelphia’s Lincoln Financial Field. And of course, the final is in the Swamp, if they make it that far.
What do you think of this schedule? Fired-up for the Gold Cup? Not so much since the U.S. may not field their “A” team? Talk to us…
