The family of a man accused of killing an Iowa State University golf star said Thursday that they’re in “mourning” over the young woman’s death.

“We are devastated by the tragedy that occurred Monday at Coldwater Golf Links. Our thoughts and prayers are with the family and friends of Celia Barquin Arozamena. We are mourning with you,” the family of Collin Richards said in a statement, according to the Des Moines Register.

Richards, 22, is charged with first-degree murder in Arozamena’s death and is being held on $5 million cash bond.

Authorities have described him as homeless, saying he lived in an encampment in the woods near the golf course where the 22-year-old college athlete was playing solo Monday morning. Her body was found in a pond near the ninth hole with multiple stab wounds in the head, neck and torso, Ames police said.

The two didn’t know each other before the attack, according to authorities, and Richards has a rap sheet that includes harassment and domestic assault charges, meth and other drug use, and multiple probation violations.

He was released from prison in June after serving about seven months for a probation violation — for threatening to “shoot up” a convenience store in January 2015, the Carroll Daily Times Herald reported.
