Tiger Woods is used to playing in front of big crowds, but that won’t be the case for the early part of his round Thursday morning at Liberty National.
A heavy storm hit the site of the Northern Trust tournament Wednesday afternoon. Grandstands, signage and tents and hospitality venues were damaged. Though the grounds crew was working overnight to make the golf course playable, there was enough damage to spectator areas that PGA Tour officials decided Wednesday night to keep fans from entering until 10 a.m. Thursday, according to ESPN.com.
Woods, who tees off at 7:43 a.m., will begin play in front of some volunteers, officials and media. He will play approximately nine holes without any fans on-site.
The first round is scheduled to begin at 7:10 a.m.
“We’re an outdoor sport, so Mother Nature is bound to show up and change our well-laid plans on occasions,” Julie Tyson, executive director of the tournament, said in a statement.
Woods, who has had a complicated history at Liberty National, finished second in this event in 2009 and 2013.
