Paige Spiranac fired back Thursday at a Twitter troll over a crude message Instagram/Paige SpiranacPaige Spiranac fired back Thursday at a Twitter troll over a hurtful comment that called attention to an emotional moment from her past.
Spiranac teared up during a press conference in 2016 after missing the cut at the Omega Dubai Ladies Masters and spoke about the “extremely cruel” comments she received from cyberbullies, who targeted her loved ones as well.
“They attack not only me, but my parents, my family, my friends and they say I’m a disgrace to golf, and no one sees that,” Spiranac said at the time, according to The Sun.
“And I still get those comments and I still deal with it every day.”
This week, however, a Twitter user appeared to reference the presser in a crude remark aimed at Spiranac, who had been promoting her “Playing A Round” podcast in a video.
“Don’t be mean to her. She will cry all over the tv about how people only talk about her boobs, while getting a playing exemption,” the message read.
Spiranac then responded, “Or maybe I cried because two minutes before I stepped on stage for the press conference I was being blackmailed over stolen private property and people were threatening my life.”
In a 2018 interview with The Guardian, Spiranac discussed her experience playing in Dubai, as well as the apparent target on her back as her star continued to rise.
Spiranac, who boasts over three million Instagram followers, has long been candid about the criticism she’s received online Instagram/Paige Spiranac“I was harassed, my family was harassed,” she said. “I was receiving death threats, people were invading my privacy, I was being blackmailed. This was going on whilst I was trying to play.”
Though Spiranac no longer plays on the professional circuit, she has continued to open up about the criticism she’s received over the years, especially the unwarranted commentary about her wardrobe. During a 2021 appearance on “The Stripe Show” podcast, Spiranac referenced a 2015 controversy, in which members of the golf community apparently had choice words over her attire.
“I have just always kind of dressed more on the provocative side and it’s just, again kind of part of who I am and I’m very comfortable with that, and I think a lot of people were upset by that, especially in golf, cause it is so conservative, and if you don’t even wear a collar it’s like, ‘she’s a stripper, she’s doing porn,’ and I’m like, ‘I’m wearing a f–king turtleneck,’” she said at the time.
