One hole into The Match, Tiger Woods is up $200,000.

Though Woods and Phil Mickelson each played the first hole at Shadow Creek in par, the pair had a side bet going with Mickelson betting $200,000 he would birdie the first hole. He did not.

Mickelson gave himself a chance with a drive down the center of the fairway and a solid approach shot that left him a little more than 9 feet for birdie. But after Woods missed his own 10-footer, Mickelson couldn’t drain the expensive putt.

Mickelson had originally wanted to put $100,000 on the opening hole of the $9 million match play duel, but Woods immediately shot back: “Double it.”

That turned into a smart investment for Woods.
