Phil Mickelson shed more light on his expletive-filled blowup with country singer Jake Owen at Jordan Spieth’s wedding last year.
Mickelson said there were no exaggerations told, though he was surprised Owen decided to go public with the story.
Tuesday at Augusta National, Mickelson, who told Owen to “go f–k yourself” after the singer shaded the high-priced spectacle around his pay-per-view match with Tiger Woods in November, said Owen’s retelling on Barstool Sport’s “Foreplay” podcast was on point.
“It happened exactly like he said,” Mickelson confirmed, according to Golf Digest. “Jake nailed it, verbatim. Rickie Fowler and I were talking, he was right there, Jake had a bunch of buddies behind him and thought he would show off a little bit and I kind of shot him down, so, yeah.”
As Owen explained, he went up to Mickelson to complain about shelling out close to $29.99 to watch a mediocre match between two golf legends.
“I was like, ‘Hey, Phil, you owe me f–king $29.99 for wasting four hours of my life with the s–tiest golf I’ve ever seen,'” Owen said. “… ‘I want my $29.99 back and apologize to me for some s–tty golf.'”
Though Mickelson, who won $9 million in The Match, then let his money do the talking, he didn’t realize Owen was going to share the story with the masses.
“I can’t tell it any better than he can. You know, it’s much better coming from him. I didn’t know he was going to talk about it publicly, but yeah, I mean, it’s all true. It happened exactly like he said,” the golfer said.
As for the “90,000” bills Mickelson boasted about during his heated exchange with Owen, the cameras caught one $100 bill in his back pocket during a warmup session on Tuesday.
