Rory McIlroy gave his 3 million Twitter followers something to ponder early Wednesday.
The golfer, who skipped the Rio Olympics over Zika fears, tweeted “#karma,” only to delete the cryptic message shortly after.
Some questioned whether the tweet was aimed at Irish boxers Michael Conlan and Paddy Barnes, who had taunted McIlroy for bowing out of the Olympics. Conlan called the golfer a “p—y,” and Barnes posted a selfie with McIlroy’s former fiancée, Caroline Wozniacki.
Though McIlroy initially laughed off the jabs, the timing of his tweet is questionable given both boxers’ disappointing performances in Rio. Barnes was upset by Samuel Carmona of Spain in the first round. Conlan went on a post-match tirade Tuesday accusing Vladimir Putin of bribing judges after he was defeated by Russia’s Vladimir Nikitin in a questionable decision.
Based on Barnes’ recent tweets, however, it appears McIlroy also could be responding to the arrest of the Olympic Council of Ireland’s president, Pat Hickey, in connection with tickets being scalped at the Games. Hickey was apprehended in Rio on Wednesday.
Hopefully this ticket scandal doesn't include our flight tickets home!

As for McIlroy, he’s remaining silent on social media. For now.
