Tony Romo is on his way to missing another PGA Tour cut, but at least this time, he will have a cool memory to go with it.

Romo, playing on a sponsor exemption in the Byron Nelson as an amateur at his home course of Trinity Fores, had a chip-in eagle from 66 feet in Thursday’s first round. The former Cowboys quarterback and current NFL analyst for CBS also had a opening-round birdie, but those were his only subpar holes in a round of 76 on the par-71 course that included two double bogeys and four bogeys.

“Couple of the tee shots really cost me just because they’re penal in those areas. You can’t miss them there,” Romo said. “Like I said, the separation between these guys is the ability to do it for long stretches, consistency.”

Dennis McCarthy holds the lead after firing an 8-under 63. Three-time major champion Brooks Koepka, the No. 3-ranked player in the world, was among nine players at 65, and Jordan Spieth shot a 3-under 68 in the afternoon wave.
