Talk about long-term planning.
Tiger Woods and Phil Mickelson are already in place to be future US Ryder Cup team captains, according to The Times of London. The PGA of America has slotted Woods to lead the US at the 2022 event in Rome and Mickelson to captain the 2024 team at Bethpage Black on Long Island.
The PGA reportedly is planning to announce the decision closer to the events. Steve Stricker, who will be a vice captain this year, is expected to take the helm at the 2020 Ryder Cup at Whistling Straits.
While Mickelson is older, Woods will be captain first because he was already a vice captain in 2016. He would be a vice captain again in this year’s event in France if he fails to make the team with points or as a wild card.
The early decision reflects the PGA’s desire to get ahead of the Europeans, who — until the US won in 2016 — dominated the competition. Mickelson has repeatedly criticized US Ryder Cup captains over his years of playing in the event.
He said in 2004 that the US was put “in a position to fail” because of captain Hal Sutton. And in 2014, he criticized Tom Watson for not asking for input from the players.
The PGA started an 11-member task force in 2014 to re-examine the US team’s approach. That committee included both Woods and Mickelson.
“I feel that we have finally grasped that family unit that the Europeans have had,” Masters champion Patrick Reed told The Times. “If we can continue that run by winning the big tournaments and keeping them in the States, it’s going to help. It’s going to help our psyche and it’s also going to hopefully get in the heads of the Europeans a little bit.”
Before winning at Hazeltine in 2016, the US had lost six of the previous seven Ryder Cups.
Jim Furyk will be the captain of this year’s US team. The United States and Europe will tee off in September at Le Golf National near Paris.
