GOOD DAY FOR ‘WALLSTREET’
FIRST RACE: Track was fast, turf good. Redefined, dropping back in for 35G tag after setting pace, tiring vs. allowance company, was 2-1 favorite going mile on grass; he opened daylight soon after start, set pace stalked by Freedom’s Honor, with Wallstreet Scandal tucked in third along rail. Around turn, Freedom’s Honor went up after Redefined outside under Javier Castellano, went past him to take lead mid-stretch. But Wallstreet Scandal, stakes-placed 4-year-old dropping in first time for tag after running in races like Champagne and Florida Derby earlier in career, rallied inside around turn under Eibar Coa, kept coming up rail to blow by Freedom’s Honor and draw off inside final furlong. Elusive Image was along late for third.
SECOND RACE: Roshani, beaten a nose at 5-2 in her May 4 debut, was 3-5 choice for Belmont winning trainer Kiaran McLaughlin under Belmont runner-up John Velazquez. She came through up rail to duel with Tom Bush first-time starter Chicopee, 8-1 under Javier Castellano. Roshani had narrow advantage heading into turn, but Chicopee proved stubborn foe and kept up pressure on favorite. Turning for home, Endless Virtue and Rick Dutrow firster Baby Bird were rallying outside. As Roshani, drained by early duel, began to fade, Endless Virtue took brief lead, but Baby Bird, ignored at 10-1 under Cornelio Velasquez, wore her down final furlong.
THIRD RACE: Hard to say jockey was “lucky” when horse dumps him early in race, but in this case Norberto Arroyo Jr. was lucky to walk away intact. Arroyo was riding Curb Appeal, 4-year-old filly who was last all around in debut sprinting on dirt, beaten 43 lengths, now was stretching out on turf. But not for long. Breaking from inside, Curb Appeal flashed speed out of chute, but heading into first turn she apparently got spooked, started bucking like bronco and crashed into and over hedge, tossing Arroyo into path of unrushing horses. Amazingly, he was unscathed. Then Curb Appeal, who obviously has “issues,” got loose again being led back, ran up and down main track in front of grandstand, looking like she wanted to vault inner rail. Finally, she crashed into pole leading to tunnel back to paddock and was apprehended.
FOURTH RACE: Lady Rizzi, 2-1 favorite after finishing close second at 7-2 in debut for Linda Rice, dueled early with first-time starter Karakorum Karen, drew off to lengthy lead under Cornelio Velasquez, was so far in front in stretch, it seemed she’d have to fall down to lose. She didn’t but lost anyway, shortening stride badly in final sixteenth as Point Spread, 7-2 with Edgar Prado up in debut for Carlos Martin, came running late to blow past Lady Rizzi in shadow of wire.
