JET NOTES
While Herm Edwards wasn’t pleased that the Jets kept letting the Chargers back in the game on Sunday, he was happy with the result and added that it was the type of game his team would have had a difficult time winning a year ago.
“We kept our composure,” Edwards said about the difference between this season and last. “We lost the momentum a couple of times, but never blinked. That was very difficult for us last year.”
The problem, however, was that the Jets couldn’t finish San Diego off.
“We couldn’t smother them,” Edwards said.
That was one of the reasons, the coach insisted, the players wouldn’t get overconfident after just two games.
“We haven’t done anything yet,” Edwards said. “A lot of teams have started out real fast and don’t achieve what they want to at the end.”
And although it seems early to be getting a bye, Edwards said it was to his and the team’s advantage.
“We need the bye,” Edwards said. “We asked them to do things over the past months that we wouldn’t have asked two years ago because this is a younger team.”

Defensive tackle Josh Evans will undergo back surgery, but isn’t necessarily lost for the year.
“It’s going to be at least five weeks, besides that I couldn’t tell you,” Edwards said.
Evans injured his lower back during the Jets’ last preseason game.

Running back Curtis Martin is off to a tremendous start, rushing for 315 yards and three touchdowns in the first two games, but Edwards said the heavy workload could be a problem for the 31-year-old.
“We’ll see,” Edwards said. “He won’t be participating a whole lot this week.”

The Jets didn’t go for a two-point conversion after scoring their last touchdown on Sunday, a move Edwards admitted was a mistake.
“On our card, we should have done it,” Edwards said of the move that could have given the Jets a 35-21 lead instead of 34-21. “There was a [lack of] communication and we didn’t go for it.”
Edwards thought RB LaMont Jordan deserved a chance to return kickoffs in wide receiver Jonathan Carter’s place on Sunday. “He was a little rusty,” Edwards said . . . Defensive coordinator Donnie Henderson has been impressed with second-year DT Dewayne Robertson. “He’s remarkable,” Henderson said. “Especially after last year and the beating he took.”
