There are two players in particular whom the Jets must contain today against the Chiefs if they’re going to be successful – running back Priest Holmes and tight end Tony Gonzalez.

Holmes, the former Ravens’ backup, is second in the NFL in rushing behind Curtis Martin with 711 yards and has a gaudy 5.3-yards average per carry. The Jets, despite playing well against the run the last two games, remain ranked last in the NFL in rushing defense.

Tony Gonzalez, considered by many to be the NFL’s best tight end, leads KC with 39 receptions and a 14.4-yard average with two TDs.

Gonzalez will be covered by a combination of Jet linebackers and safetymen, meaning there is pressure on the likes of Mo Lewis, James Farrior and Marvin Jones as well as Victor Green and Damien Robinson to contain him.

“He’s hard to defend with just one guy,” Herman Edwards said. “He’s going to make his catches, but there are certain areas of the field you try to protect, like the red zone, third-down situations.”

One of the keys to the game will be turnovers, and the Jets hope they have the advantage. The Jets lead the NFL in turnover ratio with a plus-15, with an NFL-high 24 takeaways and only nine giveaways.

The Chiefs are a minus-three, with only 12 takeaways and 15 giveaways. Of those 15 giveaways, though, only two are lost fumbles.

Chiefs’ QB Trent Green has thrown 13 INTs, which has the Jets’ DBs licking their chops. Jets’ CB Aaron Glenn has an INT in each of his last two games and leads the team with four.

Another key situation to watch is Jets’ DE John Abraham, who’s coming off a four-sack performance in New Orleans, but was slowed in practice this week by a pulled groin. Abraham is second in the AFC with 7½ sacks, a half sack behind Baltimore’s Michael McCrary.
