Looks like Don Garber wasn’t blowing smoke when he talked about the need to keep the best young Americans in MLS. After Houston’s Stuart Holden seemed destined to move to Scotland, with both Rangers and Aberdeen in for the star midfielder, now comes a report that Holden spoke with the MLS commissioner last week, and could stay in the league for a huge raise.

How huge you ask? Try 1000%. Yes, tenfold, according to the Evening Times.

“I was pretty flattered,” Holden was quoted as saying. “It shows the commitment the MLS has in keeping me in the league. I know this decision is going to impact my career.”

The grossly-underpaid Holden made only $34,728.75 last year according to Players’ Union records. How did the neatly-coiffed Holden afford all that hair gel? Poor guy was one of the league’s worst-paid paid players despite being one of its best. He had six goals and three assists, and made his National Team debut. But he could be a line for a long-overdue raise.
