Labor Day may be Ladies’ Day at Freehold Raceway as Casie Coleman looks to become the first female trainer to win the $346,000 Cane Pace.

Coleman sends out the 9-5 morning-line favorite American Ideal in the 51st edition of the first jewel in the pacing triple crown.

“It doesn’t matter whether I’m the favorite or 100-1, I know what kind of colt I’ve got and I know he won’t let me down,” said Coleman. “He races awesome every time he races.”

The 25-year-old resident of Dundas, Ontario, was very pleased for a change about her colt drawing post position three for the Cane.

“It’s a lot better than the parking lot where he usually starts,” she said.

Driven by George Brennan, American Ideal easily won his Cane elimination by 1 1/4 lengths in 1:52 2/5.

“He’s a very special horse,” said Coleman. “The speed he has, the talent he has and he’s so smart the way uses them. He’s an athlete 100 percent.”

And how does Coleman feel about her possible place in history?

“I wouldn’t say it’s more pressure,” she said. “I call it more of an honor than pressure.”
