It wasn’t long ago that Joe Inman wore the nickname “Ironman” like a badge of honor for his relentless playing schedule.
Since joining the Senior PGA Tour in 1998, Inman averaged 35 events a year for his first four seasons in a race to get himself onto the “all-time list” (the top 70 list of money winners on the PGA and senior tours) so he could earn exempt status.
Now, nearing age 55, Inman is slowing down a bit, but only in his playing schedule. He’s now becoming a TV golf personality with his work as a color commentator on CNBC.
Inman is playing this week in the Lightpath Long Island Classic at the Meadow Brook Club in Jericho, where tournament play begins Friday with a field that includes top senior tour players such as leading money winner Hale Irwin, Allen Doyle and defending champion Bobby Wadkins.
As he ripped a drive down the middle of the first fairway yesterday during a casual morning practice round, Inman cracked, “I can still play pretty well on Tuesdays. I’m not bad on Wednesdays and Thursdays, either. It’s Friday through Sunday that’s the problem.”
