St. John’s coach Mike Jarvis could reach an agreement on contract extension before the end of August, The Post has learned.
According to several sources, the university is prepared to present an extension to Jarvis within the next couple of days. Jarvis and athletic director Dave Wegrzyn will meet next week, possibly Friday, to discuss the proposal.
“Mike and I have continued to talk although we’ve been unable to meet in person because he’s been on the road recruiting,” Wegrzyn told The Post.
“Those talks have progressed since the end of the season. There are a multitude of issues such as academic support programs for the basketball program, budget issues and travel. The university is very committed to playing basketball at the highest level. Mike is our coach and we’d like him to be our coach in the future.”
Reached on his cell phone, Jarvis declined to comment. He has two years remaining on his initial seven-year deal that pays about $735,000 anually.
When Ed Manetta Jr. was the athletic director at St. John’s, he and Jarvis had discussed a four-year extension with a built-in rollover. It is uncertain if a similar proposal will be extended now that Wegrzyn is the AD.
There were times during this past season when the relationship between Jarvis and Wegrzyn appeared strained. It certainly made for an awkward situation to have a coach without a long-term commitment. There was speculation that because Wegrzyn hadn’t hired Jarvis, he wanted an opportunity to do his own evaluation.
“Over the last two years since I became the athletic director, I’ve become a lot closer to Mike and his staff,” said Wegrzyn. “It’s safe to say I feel much more comfortable working with Mike on an extension now than I did two years ago.”
