Manhattan coach Bobby Gonzalez hasn’t exactly mellowed, but the players chosen for the USA under-22 team might find a more receptive coach this summer. After three straight 20-win seasons, the Jaspers won 15 games last season.

“I learned to be a little more humble, a little more patient and I think in the long run it will make me a better coach,” said Gonzalez, who will serve as one of Villanova coach Jay Wright’s assistants. “We started three freshmen a good part of the year and I had to learn to adjust.”

Gonzalez was blessed to have a player of Luis Flores’ caliber. He spent last season with the Nuggets and is awaiting the outcome of the negotiations between the NBA and players before signing his next deal.

Without Flores, the Jaspers were great some nights and brutal on others. Gonzalez said he’s wary of talk about the Jaspers being picked a fourth straight year as the preseason favorite to win the MAAC.

“I think you begin to think it’s supposed to happen and maybe forget a little how hard you have to work to make it happen,” said Gonzalez.
