Jayson Williams says he is frustrated. He says he is in pain some days when the weather is bad. But he insists he is not through playing.

“I am going to play again – no question. It’s ridiculous to think otherwise,” Williams maintained yesterday, disputing reports that he has begun to consider his career might be over. “I can’t afford to quit, that’s for sure. Where the hell am I going to make this kind of money?

“Sure, some days are worse than others right now,” Williams continued. “When it rains 10 days in a row and you’ve got more metal in you (from operations) than a 747, you hurt some days more than others. But I will play again.”

Williams was on the verge of returning this past season from a shattered right leg and torn up knee. But during his first full practice with teammates in March, nearly one full year since his devastating injury, Williams landed on the foot of Evan Eschmeyer and fractured a bone in his left foot. That knocked out any hope of a return.

Two years ago, Williams signed a six-year, $90 million contract that has given him mixed feelings since his injury. He often claims he feels like he is “stealing” money. But on the other hand, he is not about to turn himself in and forfeit the pay.

“All basketball players are overpaid,” Williams said. “I’m probably the most overpaid person in the world. But to not play again and give that up, then I would be the stupidest person in the world. And believe me, I don’t need two titles like that.”

Williams again voiced his support for Don Casey being retained as the Nets coach – “I’m a fan,” he admitted – but he said regardless of who is in place next season, he intends to be aboard.

“I’m going be like Willis Reed if I have to,” Williams said. “I may go limping out there, but I’m playing til I drop.”
