It’s not the fifth World Series ring Derek Jeter craves but he was very grateful to win his first Gold Glove yesterday.

“It’s a great honor,” Jeter said. “I take pride in my defense and I work hard each year to improve in the field. There are a number of fantastic shortstops in the American League – too many to count – and to be recognized with the Gold Glove makes it that much more of a special accomplishment.

“I also want to thank our pitching staff for having so many of our opponents hit balls in my direction.”

Jeter, who made a career-low 13 errors this year, was much better going to his left with Alex Rodriguez, a Gold Glove winner the previous two years at shortstop, playing third base.

“Derek Jeter is a great, inspired leader and captain,” Yankees owner George Steinbrenner said in a statement. “He certainly deserves this honor.”

GM Brian Cashman echoed The Boss’ feelings.

“We all know Derek is a well-rounded player,” Cashman said. “We are glad he is getting recognition on the defensive side as well.”

Toronto outfielder Vernon Wells also was a first-time winner. In his first season with Detroit, catcher Ivan Rodriguez won his 11th Gold Glove, his first since 2001 with Texas and the most for any catcher. Johnny Bench won the award 10 times.

Rangers pitcher Kenny Rogers, who turns 40 on Nov. 10, won for the third time, the first since 2002.

Other winners included Oakland third baseman Eric Chavez, Minnesota center fielder Torii Hunter, Seattle right fielder Ichiro Suzuki, Mariners second baseman Bret Boone and Anaheim first baseman Darin Erstad.
