The Jets made a couple of expected moves yesterday when they waived safety Damien Robinson and defensive end Steve White, two free agent signings who failed to meet expectations.

Robinson, who was originally signed by the Jets before the 2001 season and thought to be a significant stabilizing force in the secondary, proved to be a flop. Not only was he not nearly as productive as he was for Edwards in Tampa Bay, making only four INTs in 29 starts, but he also was distracted by off-the-field issues, the worst of which came when he was caught with an assault rifle and ammunition while driving into Giants Stadium for a game.

The Jets also announced the hiring of Mike Canales as the club’s receivers coach, replacing Mose Rison. They also hired Pep Hamilton as an offensive quality control coach to replace the fired Mike Henning.
