* The latest with Rex Ryan is that this year’s Jets team could be his best. With Ryan thinking that he’s the best defensive head coach in the league and with Tony Sparano’s high powered offense just visiting the end zone once in the preseason, I see the Jets going 2-14, maybe. Ryan’s loss of weight seems to have caused a loss of brain power and eyesight. The clueless front office is also to blame.

* So, the preseason is over and the Jets finished 0-4. The offensive looks to be on life support, they have no running game, the wide receivers are non existent, and the offensive line is a disaster. Mark Sanchez keeps saying the Jets are saving their touchdowns for the regular season. Rex Ryan has been quoted as saying “We are going to draw some confidence from this.” Are you kidding me? General manager Mike Tannebaum must be on Mars if he thinks this team can do better than 8-8 this year and that’s a push. Tim Tebow looks as if he left his game in the Mile High City and with only a defense that has some semblance of strength, this looks over before it gets started. I’ve been a Jets fan since 1968, and I lived through the Rich Kotite era, but I can say this, If the Jets don’t bring in some receivers, such as Terrell Owens or Plaxico Burress — or even go get Hines Ward out of the broadcast booth, they’re destined for last place in the division.

Yanks for nothing
* To lose to a team of basically minor leaguers, as the Yankees did this week (the Blue Jays are depleted to say the least and mostly call-ups from their farm system) is disgraceful. Derek Jeter can’t win ball games by himself. They all better get on the ball or they will be watching the playoffs from home.

Serving with pride
* After Notre Dame’s third touchdown against Navy yesterday, CBS announcer Gary Danielson noted the difference in size of the Fighting Irish’s 6-foot-5 tight end, a future NFL player, and Navy’s 5-foot-9 defender, who will serve his country as a submariner. While fellow announcer Verne Lundquist could have made a comment about the brave men that choose to defend our nation, rather than “going pro,” he simply laughed. I did not find this amusing in any way: I doubt our brave men and women in uniform did, either.

Third or bust!
* Just what Mets fans were hoping for when the season began: Playing meaningful games in September in a battle for third place!
