Jockeys Shannon Uske and Luis Chavez were rushed to North Shore Hospital yesterday after a horrifying three-horse spill in the ninth race on the turf at Belmont Park.

Uske, a 17-year-old apprentice, was suffering severe pain in her abdomen, while Chavez cut his right hand and complained of soreness in his right shoulder. Both were conscious and moving their limbs.

Javier Castellano, the other jockey involved, was not injured, nor, amazingly, were the three horses.

The chain reaction started on the far turn of the Widener turf course, when Chavez’ mount, Midnight Summit, clipped heels with the horse in front of him and fell. Valatie, with Castellano up, tripped over him and went down, followed a split-second later by Uske aboard A.P. Junior.

Castellano quickly got to his feet, but Uske and Chavez lay on the course until they were immobilized on stretchers and put in ambulances.
