Michigan football is in a state of peril.

The university fired head coach Sherrone Moore on Wednesday after it discovered the 39-year-old husband and father of three was involved in an “inappropriate relationship with a staff member,” and he was later jailed on suspicion of assault.

The scandal emerged roughly three weeks before the opening of the transfer portal on Jan. 2, and current players and recruits who thought they’d be playing for Moore could look to leave and may already have other schools pursuing them.

The future of touted freshman quarterback Bryce Underwood might get scrutinized.

Michigan currently doesn’t have a full-time school president after Santa J. Ono left for the same job at Florida in May; Domenico Grasso is the interim president.

Athletic director Warde Manuel is also under fire as a result of this scandal and past issues, such as the 2019 hiring of gymnastics consultant Rhonda Faehn.

Faehn testified that she was told about Larry Nassar abusing other gymnasts by another coach while she worked for USA Gymnastics, and while she reported it to USA Gymnastics president Steve Penny, she didn’t tell anyone else, including law enforcement, per ESPN.

Michigan cut ties with Faehn a day later after outrage.

Manuel, 57, received a five-year contract extension last year through June 2030.

A member of Jim Harbaugh’s Wolverines staff for six years, Moore took over as the program’s head coach in 2024 when Harbaugh returned to the NFL with the Chargers.

Now the school needs another new coach two seasons removed from winning a national championship, and one name that has been linked to Michigan is Alabama head coach Kalen DeBoer.

NBC Sports college football insider Nicole Auerbach wrote Wednesday on X that DeBoer “would be the obvious top name for Michigan,” and MLive has DeBoer atop its candidates list.

DeBoer, 51, already has one of the most desirable jobs in the sport and is in his second season as Nick Saban’s replacement.

But after going 9-4 in his first season in Tuscaloosa and controversially making the College Football Playoff this season after a blowout loss to Georgia in the SEC Championship game, there could be tension surrounding DeBoer’s performance if the Crimson Tide get handed an early exit.

No. 9 Alabama (10-3) visits Oklahoma (10-2) next Friday in the first round.
