KENYON DRAWS TWO-GAME BAN
Two punches equal two games without pay. That’s justice, NBA-style.
The Nets’ Kenyon Martin and the Clippers’ Corey Maggette both drew those penalties yesterday from NBA Senior VP Stu Jackson, a day after the players’ third-quarter fight in the Nets’ 92-75 romp.
Following a hard foul by Martin, each player threw two punches in an ensuing scuffle. A one-game suspension is mandatory for throwing a punch.
“Our players have to understand behavior like this just cannot be tolerated,” Jackson said, explaining the two-game ban matched penalties for similar past incidents. “If it’s something that doesn’t escalate to a higher level we would consider only penalizing the players involved with one game.
“In looking at this more and more, I felt strongly the incident could have been prohibited had cooler heads prevailed,” concluded Jackson, who said Martin’s past “absolutely did not” affect his verdict. “It got to a level that was ugly.”
Net President Rod Thorn admitted he was “hopeful” Martin would only get one game but seemed to accept the judgment based on the “level” the fight reached.
“The league felt it merited two games. There’s nothing you can do,” Thorn said.
After the incident, Maggette and Clipper coach Mike Dunleavy brought up Martin’s past (six flagrant fouls, seven games suspended two years ago). Net coach Byron Scott, who has strongly maintained Martin is past all that, was ticked off by Dunleavy’s insinuations.
“I was a little upset about it,” said Scott, who played for Dunleavy as a Laker. “When I first read it, I had a few cuss words. I think he was a little off-base … I’m around this kid every day. I know how much he’s changed.”
Martin will miss tomorrow in Philadelphia and Wednesday against Washington at home. Maggette sat last night in Philly and must miss Friday in Toronto.
* Nets waived C Mikki Moore and PG Robert Pack, although they would re-sign Pack if they don’t get Charlie Ward (could clear waivers tonight).
Moore temporarily will be replaced on the roster by Eddie Griffin, who then figures to be IL’d with rookie Zoran Planinic getting activated. The Nets can bring back Pack through 10-day deals, then re-sign him for the season. Griffin was expected to arrive from L.A. last night, take a physical and start practicing today. . . .
Nets expect Aaron Williams available for Philly. Williams (groin) has missed 10 games. . . .
With the winning streak at four and with 13 victories in 16 games, Scott and the Nets went bowling yesterday. Scott had been considering the move as a reward and as a way to get fun back in the season.
