Any punishment Khabib Nurmagomedov faces from the Nevada State Athletic Commission and the UFC will have nothing on what awaits him from his father.
Abdulmanap Nurmagomedov, who was the target of the Conor McGregor trash-talking that helped provoke his son to climb out of the octagon and attack the Irishman’s team after submitting him at UFC 229 on Saturday in Las Vegas, wasn’t happy with the post-fight antics that led to brawls inside and outside the cage.
The elder Nurmagomedov expressed disappointment to Russia’s Ren TV and said Khabib will have hell to pay upon his return, even though Russian president Vladimir Putin called to congratulate the UFC lightweight champion.
“I think that for Khabib, the most severe sanctions would be my regard. I am going to regard this severely,” Abdulmanap said. “I warned him. For me, the most important thing is discipline. You can do whatever you want in the octagon, but beyond its barrier — this is the border separating civilians, there are children, women, bystanders.
“This fight took place within the octagon. That’s the spectacle. But I am categorically against fighting outside the octagon. Outside of the octagon, you need to exist peacefully. Fight in the octagon.”
Khabib said he expected this type of reaction from his father, who made him wrestle a bear cub at age 9.
“I know my father gonna smash me when I go home because … I know he gonna smash me,” he said after the fight.
However, Abdulmanap, who was unable to attend the bout because he was not granted a visa to travel to the US, said in the interview he understands his son’s anger toward McGregor.
McGregor called Abdulmanap a “quivering coward” over his Instagram post of Chechen dictator Ramzan Kadyrov when they were at a mosque together. The caption read, “Together we are stronger.” McGregor, who also went after Khabib’s Islamic faith, characterized the post as respect out of fear.
McGregor and Khabib’s current concern should be possible sanctions from the NSAC and UFC. McGregor also had a complaint filed against him, according to reports, after additional video showed he threw a punch at a member of Khabib’s team while sitting on top of the octagon. Khibib’s purse is being withheld pending an investigation.
While no criminal charges were filed against any of the principals involved in the brawl, according to MMA Fighting, Khabib may need to be concerned with his father laying down the law to him.
