LACK OF ‘TALENT’ HELPS LILLY
Nearly a third of the 100 or so horses that will run in Saturday’s Breeders’ Cup at Churchill Downs had their final major tune-ups yesterday morning. One who didn’t was the 2-year-old filly Untouched Talent, a leading candidate for the Juvenile Fillies. The daughter of Storm Cat was withdrawn from the race after undergoing throat surgery last week.
With Untouched Talent out, Lilly Carson, third in the Frizette, draws into the field.
There was plenty of action at Belmont Park yesterday morning despite stiff winds gusting up to 40 mph. No camera crew from TVG’s “The Works” show was on-hand to capture the drills, even though they included top contenders in seven of the eight Breeders’ Cup events.
Trainer Kiaran McLaughlin sent out a pair over the training track. Henny Hughes, the Sprint favorite, looked good breezing an easy half-mile in :51 – “We know he can run, he’s fit, so this was just a maintenance work,” McLaughlin said – and Invasor, his standout for the Classic, went five furlongs in 1:01.3.
Todd Pletcher worked 12 of his record 18 Breeders’ Cup pre-entries, while Shug McGaughey sent his lone runner, 3-year-old filly Pine Island, five furlongs in 1:01 over the main track.
“She’s doing really well,” said McGaughey, oozing confidence. “This was the topping on the cake.”
In other noteworthy works, at Churchill Downs Bordonaro went four furlongs in :48.2 for the Sprint, Dreaming of Anna blasted a bullet half in :47 for the Juvenile Fillies, and Pletcher’s Flower Alley breezed six furlongs in 1:15 for the Classic.
Nick Zito worked two live longshots five furlongs, both in company: CP West in 1:00.1 for the Juvenile and Sun King in 1:00.4 for the Classic.
The new Polytrack at Keeneland played faster than usual yesterday. The filly Gorella zipped a bullet :58 in company for the Mile, Kelly’s Landing fired a bullet :46.1 for the Sprint, Sutra went :59.1 for the Juvenile Fillies and Round Pond drilled a handy :59 for the Distaff.
Over the turf course, Cacique breezed six furlongs in 1:13. Graham Motion’s BC veterans Better Talk Now (Turf) and Film Maker (Filly & Mare Turf) went six furlongs together in 1:12.3.
