The final game late Siena lacrosse coach Liam Gleason coached carried quite the sentimental touch.

Gleason’s squad faced his alma mater, Albany, which not only provided him with his education but also his coaching tutorial as the school’s associate coach for seven years before joining the Saints in 2018.

Though Gleason’s Saints lost 11-9 to the Great Danes on May 7, he hugged close friend and Albany coach Scott Marr before and after the rivalry matchup, as chronicled by the Times Union.

For Marr, having that memory means so much more now in the aftermath of Gleason’s shocking death Wednesday at the age of 41 following injuries sustained in a home accident over the weekend.

“I was just so happy that we had that opportunity now, looking back on it, to have that game and for all of us to be together and celebrate both of our programs here in the Capital Region,” Marr told the paper Wednesday. “It was a special moment.”

Siena and Albany, a pair of Central New York institutions separated by roughly eight miles, both played important roles in Gleason’s life.

The Long Island native graduated from Albany in 2007 after transferring from Adelphi, and met his wife, Jaclyn, a soccer player, while attending the America East school.

Gleason then joined his alma mater’s coaching staff the next year and served as defensive coordinator for three years before getting his first head coaching gig in 2011 with The College of Saint Rose.

He ultimately joined Albany’s staff under Marr, providing him with the experience needed to finally get his first Division I head coaching job with Siena.

The Times Union reported that Gleason had both a Siena and Albany flag laid across him while being moved around Albany Medical Center on Wednesday.

Gleason fell down the stairs at his home at approximately 4 p.m. Sunday and suffered a serious injury, according to the outlet.

Marr joined a group of roughly 250 people Wednesday who stood in the hallways at the hospital for the “honor walk” in which they transported Gleason for organ donation, per the paper.

Siena assistant Tim Cox, Siena players, former Albany teammates and athletic staffers from both schools came to the hospital for the moment.

A funeral service will be held Saturday at 11 a.m.

“Very emotionally driven, by just the amount of support and presence, and seeing everybody come together on his final descent,” Cox told the Times Union.

“Honoring him the only way we knew we could in that moment. The scene will last with me forever. It’ll help overshadow the dark times and dark thoughts over the last couple of days.”

Added Siena athletic director John D’Argenio: “I said to somebody, ‘That’s the power of Liam.’ Bringing everybody together, two programs that he was right in the middle of.”

Siena captain Colby LeBlanc commended his coach for being an organ donor and said the program will attempt to defend its MAAC conference crown in Gleason’s honor.

“I know he wouldn’t want us to just roll over and end the season,” LeBlanc told the outlet. “Definitely, it’s motivating for sure. … I think he would want this; for us to go out and win another one for him.”

Despite their proximity, the Saints and Great Danes will only meet in the regular season for the second time in 10 years next March 17, 2026.

Marr said the programs will now have an annual date in Gleason’s honor.

“It’s a testament to him and who he was, and how he was respected in the lacrosse community, as a coach and as a person,” Marr told the Times Union. “Everybody has the same feeling about him. He was fun to be with and entertaining — and just a good person.”
