Shameka Christon has been likened by some to Sheryl Swoopes, but Liberty head coach Richie Adubato doesn’t agree.

“I don’t like comparisons,” the Liberty head coach said of Christon, whom the Liberty selected yesterday with their first-round pick, fourth overall, in the WNBA Draft. “But she has a chance to be a star.”

Christon was the SEC Player of the Year after averaging 21.8 ppg as a senior at Arkansas. The 6-foot-1 forward is expected to help Crystal Robinson, who often played an undersized small forward.

“I think she could be the sleeper of the draft,” said Liberty GM Carol Blazejowski. “This kid is the mirror image of Sheryl Swoopes.”

The team also selected Amisha Carter, a 6-2 center from Georgia Tech, in the second round and Cathy Joens, a 5-11 guard from George Washington in the third. UConn’s Diana Taurasi was the first-overall pick, drafted by the Phoenix Mercury.
