New York City F.C. head coach Domenec Torrent barely knows his new home well enough to find a good Japanese restaurant.

“Don’t forget [Manchester City manager] Pep [Guardiola] lived here [for] one year, and right now Pep knows more restaurants than me,” Torrent said ahead of his close friend’s 2-1 loss to Liverpool at MetLife Stadium Wednesday night.

But that inexperience doesn’t extend to soccer. The Spaniard served as an assistant under Guardiola at Barcelona, Bayern Munich and Manchester City before departing for NYCFC this summer.

Wednesday’s Premier League showdown was a glimpse of what Torrent envisions for his new team, as both teams turned up the pressure in the second half Wednesday to give fans an attacking showcase.

Though NYCFC never will have the transfer budget of their City Football Group siblings, they now have a manager with the ability to deploy his side like some of the world’s best.

“I think [Torrent] is really good as a coach and I think he’s similar to Pep, does the similar things,” Manchester City midfielder Phil Foden said before the game.

Torrent’s time at NYCFC has started smoothly, as he has led the team to a 4-1 record, employing a pressing system similar to his “brother” Guardiola.

“They are getting better,” Torrent said at Monday’s practice in Orangeburg, NY. “They play, they train with more intensity than my first week here. … For me, it’s very important when we lose the ball to react quickly, and we’re training all the time in that way.”

Pressing methods were seen Wednesday in East Rutherford, as each side harried the opposition high up the pitch to create second-half chances.

The game featured players of much higher quality than those on Torrent’s squad. The goals came from City’s Leroy Sane, and Liverpool’s Mo Salah and Sadio Mane, who won the game with an injury-time penalty kick.

But despite the gap in quality and the ultimate result, Manchester City’s performance Wednesday night offered a rough blueprint for how NYCFC could be playing in a couple of years.
