The California State Athletic Commission has supended the license of Antonio Margarito and his trainer Javier Capetillo. By GEORGE WILLIS
The California State Athletic Commission hit Antonio Margarito harder than Shane Mosley did last Saturday at the Staples Center.
The CSAC has temporarily suspended the licenses of Margarito and his chief trainer Javier Capetillo, saying in a statement a “foreign substance” was found in the hand wraps of Margarito before his welterweight championship bout with Mosley at the Staples Center.
Margarito and Capetillo have been asked to appear before the CSAC at an initial hearing scheduled for Feb. 10, 2009, as the investigation continues into the circumstances that led to the discovery of that foreign substance.
What has been described as hardened pieces of gauze or plastic of Paris were discovered in Margarito’s hand wraps after Mosley’s trainer Naazim Richardson requested to “feel” them.
While Margarito was allowed to fight—losing his WBA welterweight championship by ninth-round TKO–the pieces were sent to Sacramento where it is being analyzed by the California Department of Justice.
The suspensions will be honored by Nevada and New York and will remain in effect until a final determination is made on whether “this case warrants fines, suspension or the revocation of licenses,” the statement said.
