As Jet fans digest yesterday’s 27-14 first-place-securing victory by the Jets over the rival Bills with their coffee and breakfast today, visions of many big plays and different heroes will quickly flash to mind.

They’ll replay the 97-yard kickoff return for a touchdown by Kevin Williams, rehash the 45-yard Marcus Coleman Hail Mary scoring reception at the end of the half and praise Vinny Testaverde for his usual poise.

Quiet and forgotten on that list of heroes will be Curtis Martin who didn’t eclipse 100 yards or break off any long runs.

What Martin did in rushing for 84 yards on 29 carries, though, was wear down the Buffalo defense and eat minutes off the game clock.

Martin, too, was the player slashing through the Jets’ offensive line and into the end zone from five yards out on a critical fourth-and-1 play in the second quarter to give the Jets a 14-7 lead.

“I wasn’t surprised we went for it on fourth down,” Martin said. “Al [Groh] has confidence in us and we have confidence in us. The offensive line did a great job. [The hole] was pretty big. That was a big momentum shift for us.”

There were plenty of those yesterday, but all the while Martin was his consistent self. His 84-yard rushing output was the most yards he’s rushed against the Buffalo defense in five games as a Jet.

After the game, Martin warned not to become too overconfident with the start.

“A lot of teams get off to a 3-0 start and fizzle,” Martin said. “We’ve got some tough games ahead of us.”
