Howie Kussoy picks his winner for Friday night’s college football matchup between Maryland and Iowa. Home team in CAPS.

MARYLAND (+3.5) over Iowa

The Terrapins haven’t reached double digits in wins since 2003. Every promising start — 2013, 2016, 2017 and 2019— since then has ended with a thud. In 2013, a 4-0 start ended with a 63-0 loss at Florida State.

In 2016, a 4-0 start ended with a 24-point loss at Penn State. In 2017, they upset Texas, then got annihilated by Central Florida. In 2017, they upset Texas again, then got stunned by Temple.

In 2019, they destroyed No. 21 Syracuse, then got upset by Temple again. So, what has changed? The most unstable quarterback room in college football has stumbled into a Heisman Trophy candidate, Taulia Tagovailoa, who will be leading Maryland into the program’s biggest home game in nearly two decades.
