St. John’s forward Anthony Mason Jr. received a medical hardship from the Big East conference and will be granted another year of eligibility, the university announced today.
Mason Jr. was averaging 14 points per in the Red Storm’s first three games last season before an MRI exam revealed a torn peroneal tendon in his right foot suffered during an 82-70 loss to Boston College. Mason Jr. was sidelined for the remainder of his senior season. “I am really grateful to the Big East and St. John’s for granting me another year to play,” Mason Jr., son of the former Knicks power forward, said in a press release. “Having been out for almost the whole year, I watched and learned a lot. I can’t wait to go out and perform with my team on the court this season.”
The Red Storm will be looking to bounce back from another sub-par season where they went 15-16 overall and 6-12 in the Big East.
“We’re obviously very happy and excited to have Mason back,” coach Norm Roberts said. “We all felt terrible for him when he got hurt, but now he has a great opportunity to come back. He is such a versatile scorer, and his ability to be our main scorer on any given night makes our team that much deeper.”
